Day 1, Wednesday, May 8
Today we travel to our State’s capital, Jefferson City. Named by Rand McNally as one of America’s most beautiful small towns, we start our quest to see why. After a tasty lunch at a local restaurant, we’ll take a little time to work out the kinks and walk around one of the delightful shopping areas near the Capitol. Then we’ll visit the majestic Capitol Building. Completed in 1917 she soars above the banks of the Missouri River. Bronze statues complement the grounds and the interior, and the historic murals by Thomas Hart Benton are a treasure. Be sure to visit the small museum located in this building. Everyone’s in for a treat with a break at Central Dairy for some hand-dipped ice cream. We arrive at our hotel ready to relax and enjoy a light dinner. (L,D)
Day 2, Thursday, May 9
This morning we take the opportunity to visit and tour the historic Missouri State Penitentiary. Opened in 1836 this was the only true prison west of the Mississippi for many years. It housed the likes of “Pretty Boy” Floyd, James Earl Ray and heavyweight boxer, Sonny Liston. The Penitentiary also houses a Museum for a quick peek at the artifacts housed there. For those who manage to escape the lock-up, lunch will follow at Prison Brews restaurant. We’ll head to the Governor’s Mansion and tour the official home of our Governor. Situated atop the bluffs not far from the Capitol, this gorgeous mansion was built in 1871. It has served every governor since its completion. Governor Kit Bond spearheaded a renovation project that helped restore the mansion to its 19th century glory. A local guide will step on the coach to direct a short tour of the Jeff City area, highlighting additional historic buildings and scenic riverfronts. After dinner, we’ll retire to the hotel for another restful evening. (B,L,D)
Day 3, Friday, May 10
It is hard to believe that it is almost time to start back to Springfield, but first we make a “detour” up to Boonville MO – just 49 miles upriver from Jefferson City. We’ll pay respects to the most famous breed of magnificent horses in Missouri. Situated on 300-plus acres of lush, rolling hills, Warm Springs Ranch is the breeding facility for the famed Budweiser Clydesdales. At any one time there may be as many as 70 horses ranging from frisky foals to imposing stallions enjoying the good life on this beautiful ranch. Leaving Boonville, we’ll stop in Osage Beach. The Lake of the Ozarks is recognized as one of the largest man-made lakes in the U.S., and the perfect place for our farewell luncheon. As we head back to Springfield, we may have a renewed appreciation for the beauty and history of our own State Capitol. (B,L)
